The Medellin Metro Cable Project was registered as CDM project
The project Metro Cable Medellin, Mass Transit Company Aburrá Valley Limited, was registered as a project of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) by the Executive Board of the Framework Convention on Climate Change United Nations (UNFCCC acronyms in English).
The formulation of the CDM project was financed with funds from the Mass Transportation Company Ltd Aburrá Valley-ETMVA - and the alliance between the Fund for Environmental Action and Children - Action Fund - and the National Center for Cleaner Production and Environmental Technologies - CNPMLTA -. The methodology used was the AMS-III.U developed by Grütter Consulting AG, Swiss firm expert in transport CDM projects, and who also supported the formulation of joint project with the Alliance Action Fund - CNPMLTA.
The validation was conducted by TÜV SÜD, international firm qualified to validate CDM projects in the transport sector. The registration of the project was made on 26 April 2010 with a crediting period of seven years (http://cdm.unfccc.int/Projects/DB/TUEV-SUED1260805836.78/view).
With the operation of the six cable transport systems, the project intends to reduce during the first crediting period (7 years) 121 029 tonCO2e. Revenues from the sale of these CERs (Certified Emission Reductions) contribute to strengthen the operation and development of such new projects ETMVA and pay for services in support of the Alliance to allow the continuation of support to other companies and projects in the country engaged in technological change and reduce emissions of Greenhouse Gases.
Metrocable The project includes the construction of six cables (lift) in Medellín, integrated into the system and operated by Metro ETMVA as an alternative transport to the high areas of the city. The cables used in electric power, and have a total length of 16 kilometers and transported approximately 113,000 passengers per day.
The project has clear environmental, social and economic as well as a high potential for replication in other cities of Colombia and Latin America. From the environmental perspective, seeks to optimize the use of buses and other means of transportation that use fossil fuels. This represents the reduction of emissions of particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HCs), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrous oxides (NOx) as well as the protection of the ozone layer, contributing significantly to improving air quality. .
Moreover, the social impact is obvious because the wires operating in vulnerable areas of Medellin. This means reduced travel times, generating 450 jobs during the construction phase and a decrease in rates, accidents and respiratory diseases. Likewise, the ETMVA has made a series of projects that benefit local people, such as construction of public spaces and areas for recreation and sport.
The use of lifts as an alternative to mass transit is unique in the world. Only two currently operating systems are comparable, but with a much smaller capacity. With this project and the TransMilenio system in Bogota, Colombia is a leader in transportation CDM projects. THREE transport projects under the CDM registered worldwide, two of them are in Colombia
